How hard is it to get into YoungArts? ›

Entrance into this prestigious organization starts with a highly competitive application process for talented artists ages 15–18, or grades 10–12, in the United States. Applications are adjudicated through a rigorous blind process by esteemed discipline- specific panels of artists.

The acceptance/selection rate of the YoungArts National Competition is about 10%, a number you should keep in mind while preparing your submission and application.

YoungArts award winners will be notified via the email address provided in the application. Award winners with distinction will also receive a follow-up phone call via the contact information provided in their application. All award winners will be announced on the official winners list posted on our website.

Award Levels

The YoungArts Award recognizes work that demonstrates exceptional technique; a strong sense of artistry; and a depth of thinking/performance that exceeds the level of peers at this career stage. YoungArts award winners receive a monetary award of $250.

The application fee for applying to YoungArts is $35. If you submit multiple applications across disciplines or categories, there is a $35 fee for each.

The foundation is based in Miami, Florida. Alumni of the program include Timothée Chalamet, Jessica Darrow, Kerry Washington, Matt Bomer, Billy Porter, Anna Gunn, Andrew Rannells, Kimiko Glenn, Ben Levi Ross, Sam Lipsyte, Chris Young, Neal Dodson, Viola Davis, Nicki Minaj, Ryan McCartan, Doug Aitken, and Max Schneider.

Each year, YoungArts receives over 7,000 applications from the country's most accomplished high school artists, ages 15-18 or in grades 10-12 across 10 artistic disciplines: Classical Music, Dance, Design Arts, Film, Jazz, Photography, Theater, Visual Arts, Voice and Writing.

Winners are chosen for their caliber of artistic achievement by esteemed discipline-specific panels of artists through an adjudication process that includes multiple rounds of review. All YoungArts award winners receive cash prizes between $250 and $10,000.

Application Requirements

The strongest submissions demonstrate a sense of inventiveness, show attention to the complexities and technical aspects of language, and have a clear, original, and distinct point of view.

The YoungArts award competition is open to artists (1) between the ages of 15–18 or in high school grades 10–12 (2) that are United States citizens, permanent residents or are legally able to receive taxable income in the United States (3) that demonstrate excellence in Classical Music, Dance, Design Arts, Film, Jazz, ...

Two (2) to three (3) written poems. Total written materials not to exceed 10 pages. Separate video performance for each poetry submission. Submissions must be in English.

Media Submission Guidelines

All forms of photography are accepted including documentary, conceptual, portrait, environment, color, black and white, alternative processes, digital, and mixed media.
