What happens if I fail LifeSafer? ›

If you fail a breath test, the interlock will enter a temporary lockout period for the first failed BAC test. This lockout time is set by state regulation.

If you do not show up for your service appointment, you will be charged a missed appointment fee. Your vehicle will go into permanent SERVICE LOCKOUT mode and you will need to have your vehicle towed to the service location. Most jurisdictions are notified of a permanent SERVICE LOCKOUT.

Driving without an ignition interlock device (IID) in violation of a court order is a DUI probation violation. You will likely be arrested, and a probation violation hearing will be set. At the hearing, the judge may tighten the terms of your probation. You may also be fined.

Generally speaking, the first failed test will result in a 2-15 minute lockout. After that, you will be asked to retest. If the retest is successful, you will be able to start your car and be on your way.

All states allow drivers to submit a second breath test if they fail the first one. However, if they provide a second failed sample, they may experience a lockout. This means they will be unable to start the car after a certain amount of time passes.

An interlock device can detect alcohol on someone's breath. It does not do anything to detect anything else such as drugs.

What BAC will fail an interlock in California? ›

Note that you must keep your BAC very low to pass a rolling test with an IID. For example, most drivers in California must keep their BAC below 0.08% to operate a vehicle legally. Conversely, you may fail an IID test if your BAC is above 0.02%, leading to harsh penalties and the loss of your driving privileges.

You must take your vehicle to your service center to have it reset and have data downloaded. Call LifeSafer at 855-710-2423 as soon as safely possible to schedule an appointment at your service center for this reset and data download. Failure to do so can result in permanent lockouts that require towing.

So is the camera spying on you? An ignition interlock camera only takes pictures at designated times. Typically when a user is powering up the interlock, taking the test, and starting the vehicle. Those photos are downloaded with the other ignition interlock data at the regular monitoring and calibration appointment.

588 means there may be a communication error with IID. Check your vehicle battery voltage and/or charge your battery and call us if the problem persists.

A fail message on your Ignition Interlock Device means that alcohol is detected at or above your state's specific fail level. It may not mean that you are at the violation level indicated in your state's standards. For initial tests, you will not be able to start your vehicle.

If you fail a second time, the period you have to wait before trying again will be longer. In many states, the third attempt is your last chance. Pass the test and you can start the vehicle. Fail the breath test, and the device will lock you out permanently.

Your vehicle will not be able to start. Remember that all states have their own Ignition Interlock requirements regarding violations, but you can ask a Smart Start customer care representative at any time what to do. Any Ignition Interlock violation will be recorded and sent to your State Authority.
